Land Runs

Random encounters while looking over leases with wildlife throughout the year gives us a good idea of regional populations. The quail above were in no rush to cross the road allowing us time to get the camera.

Picking through wheat stubble. They didn't even bother to keep an eye on us.

That is until we moved too close.

Average First Fall Frost

One answer to some of the feedback received from those scouting this summer is the average first fall frost using Kansas City, Missouri as a central location is October 31. That average comes from records spanning the years from 1893 to the past fall. The surrounding area's average first frost date varies considerably as illustrated by:

Bethany Missouri, October 8

Brookfield Missouri, October 17

Greensburg Kansas, October 12

Washington Kansas, October 8

Conservation, Fuel & Hunting

Los Angels Times, Drunk on ethanol, Basing energy policy on corn could fuel a potential disaster.
August 20, 2007.

"...To meet the Senate's 2022 renewable-fuels mandate of 36 billion gallons using corn would take 96 million acres. Last year, the entire corn crop, most of which went to food, was grown on 80 million acres. The only source of unused farmland is 37 million acres in the federal Conservation Reserve Program...The great hope for the future is "cellulosic" ethanol, which can be made from a wide variety of biological matter. Cellulosic ethanol is an exciting development because it's much more energy efficient than corn ethanol and emits less pollutants. It can also be made out of waste materials such as wood chips or cornstalks, though the fuel source considered to have the most potential is switchgrass...widespread switchgrass cultivation once again raises worries that conservation lands would be dedicated to farming...."

The entire article is a balanced and objective look at the political non-rational side of the nation's fuel issues and worth the read to anyone that finds the quote above interesting.

The Other Side

Newsday.com, ANIMAL HOUSE: Humane Society in the hot seat, Denise Flaim, August 20, 2007.

"...In the aftermath of Katrina, the Humane Society has increasingly drawn the ire of purebred cat and dog fanciers...suggesting the group misappropriated the $34 million it raised in response to the Gulf Coast devastation...Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti opened an inquiry into how Humane Society funds have been used....Pacelle quotes that purportedly show his support for the extinction of domestic animals...Humane Society's support of AB 1634, the recently defeated California bill that would require mandatory spaying and neutering of every puppy and kitten in the state...they [PETA & HSUS] have a lot of the same goals - that is, no buying, no breeding until every animal is adopted...The most recent cat fight, Pacelle says, just comes with the territory: Revenues for the Humane Society of the United States have increased by $50 million since he took over in June 2004. 'We're the big dog now, so that means people are going to scrutinize and attack us, even if there's little basis.'..."
