Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All!
23 December
Personal BestI promised pictures when I returned. Here they are. Some of them aren’t very good b/c of the lighting, but it is a great buck. Great tine length and excellent antler mass.
As you know, I am a first-year member from Virginia. I hunted with a long-time member on this trip to [location deleted]. I am pleased to report that I killed the biggest buck of my life on the second day of my hunt. The deer quantities were low in the area that I hunted, but the quality was exceptional. The first day, I sat from 6:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and never saw a deer. On the second day, I saw only 2 deer, but both were shooter bucks. We saw some impressive rubs.
Thanks again for all of your help in recommending properties and for the professionalism of your staff. You have a first-rate organization, and I am pleased to be a member.
It is always welcomed feedback when a hunter tells of having achieved another level in his hunting career. Both Jon and John feel pressure for each hunter to get the hunt they are after. Receiving such generous feedback makes it all worth while. Thank you.
Christmas Week HuntsThose planning a hunt trip next week need not be overly concerned due to national news reports of adverse winter weather. We did get snowfall ground accumulation at less than the 7 inches predicted in NE Kansas, more north toward and in Iowa and less in southern Kansas/Missouri. Winds during the storm did create whiteout conditions blamed for highway accident closures and with the winds out of the north, county east-west limited maintenance dirt roads will have vehicle blocking drifts. The MAHA region did not get the ice over conditions as reported on some commercial news media. The week out forecast shows warmer temperatures that may cause mud road travel conditions making it necessary to pay attention to the road surface indicators on the maps. Once again, the more mild climate of the central mid-west will make for those traveling from the north the worst weather in their driveways and those coming from the south the chance to enjoy some snow. Good luck to all.
Land"...The biggest thing that caused the increase this time was the demand for biofuels. Corn and bean prices have soared, and as a result, agricultural land values have gone up..." Iowa farm land values at an all-time high, by Scott Niles, Courier staff writer, December 20, 2007. The divide between profit margin for grain compared to conservation acreage increases.
The Other SideEvery victory, no matter how small or seemingly inconsequential, is one more step toward their goal. "...The head of a monastery criticized by an animal-rights group for its treatment of hens says the monks will phase out their egg production business in the next 18 months...' Charleston, South Carolina, NBC News Now Channel 2, No More Eggs, Thursday, Dec 20, 2007
"...Democratic U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York supports giving driver's licenses to illegal aliens, but she opposes right-to-carry statutes that provide concealed-carry licenses for law-abiding American citizens...Clinton was the only presidential candidate, either Republican or Democrat, who ignored an invitation to appear at the recent Gun Rights Policy Conference in Fort Mitchell, Ky..." Hillary blew chance to speak to gun owners, The Daily Advisor, Lafayette, LA.
22 December Humor and a Good HuntJohn/Jon: I just wanted to send you guys a note to tell you how happy I have been to hunt on MAHA property the last few years, and especially recently when I shot a nice buck in the [location deleted] season. All the MAHA property I have hunted is well taken care of, has a lot of game, and appears to have been carefully chosen by you guys to provide the members the best opportunities around. As an Army officer stationed at Fort Riley with multiple deployments under my belt and another likely on the horizon, I greatly appreciate having access to great hunting/fishing land and an easy system to reserve where you want to go. Now, on to the hunting story.....
I was deer hunting last week on MAHA property, and had a stand set up overlooking some CRP and a wooded dry creekbed with lots of good deer sign. I heard a deer behind me close (40 yards) running through the grass, so I turned around, saw a good rack but knew I had to stop him in order to shoot accurately, so I gave a loud imitation of a deer call (with my mouth, so no telling what it really sounded like) and he stopped on a dime, broadside 35 yards away. I was looking in the scope and his head/rack was partially behind a bush, and I shot at the vitals.
He bounded 20 yards and fell over in high grass. I got down and then started doubting myself on rack-size since I never really got a good look at it -- hoped it wasn't a raghorn since it was early in the season still. Well, I was pretty darn pleased when I walked up to him -- 21 inch spread, 10 pointer, G2s/G3s all about 13-14 inches. Picture attached.
Thanks again!
Wow, just wow! Thank you for a look at one great buck.
