Deer scouting is divided during two time periods that of pre deer season and that during the deer season with different rules for each.

Pre-season deer scouting, the hunter will receive a unit map sheet per day to scout that may amount up to several thousand acres of land. The deer hunter may pick and choose from all the unit's acreage of which to walk on, glass or drive by. Pre-season is the time period before 15 September and after 15 January, or that period outside of deer season.

Exceptions are during spring turkey youth and regular seasons starting the first of April though the end of May. This period follows the during season scouting rules.

Deer scouting rules in terms of hunt quality management.

During season scouting, 15 September to 15 January (plus spring turkey season late March through May 31), hunters will make scouting reservations to individual numbered properties. This insures no one that is deer scouting will be stepping on someone out on a hunt. Further, a deer scouting day does count as a hunter pressure day during the season. No one will be permitted to scout a numbered farm during the season just before someone scheduled to hunt that lease.

Most land is available to scout during most of the year with 17 February being the latest we have observed full racks on deer. Some leases secured from investment groups and corporations may not always be available to scout except during specified yearly periods typically just before the season.

All deer scouting is by foot, no off road vehicles or horses at all at any time for scouting.

Some rubs from one lease.

Self guided deer hunts means the deer hunter scouts himself as well.
