Our Definition

Upland bird dog power means several things to different hunters. We will identify the elements to dog power relative to the hunts we provide.

Bird dog power is bird finding capability of a dog that renders shot opportunity to the hunter.

The first element begins with the type of hunter we will work with. In our case, that is Mid-America Hunting Association, we first refer to dog power relative to the self guided quail and self guided pheasant hunter. In both cases we seek the hunter that enjoys his dogs away from others and not in a dog club environment, just dog hunt execution.

Singles quail point long after the covey flush on a windy, dry warm morning.

Dog power elements relative to the dog include:

The dog may be a pointing, flushing or retrieving selectively bred or mixed dog. The issue is for the hunter to enjoy the dog work (recurring statement to make the point). To enjoy that dog work requires a dog that hunts for the foot hunter thereby eliminating horseback hunts where the hunter is required to keep up with the dog. We are a foot hunting only organization.

We do not lease land is sufficiently large contiguous acreage to allow for horseback or vehicle bird hunts. Quality habitat does not come packaged in that manner in the central mid-west where the most commonly bought and sold acreage is a 1/4 section or 160 acres. Selectively leasing multiple smaller acreage parcels, 80 - 640 acres, produces more action than contiguous large area parcels. That is simply the nature of our regional habitat and our understanding of that leads to more dog action and less nature walking.

Dog power continues with a dog that first hunts close for the for the hunter and one that either flushes or is steady to point for shot opportunity. The long ranger flusher or unsteady pointing dog only disrupts the field from a good hunt.

Fine Points

These may be considered pretty fine and simple points however, for the nuance of hunts for both pheasant and quail those that seek other than to enjoy their own dogs we do not seek as members.

Disappointing

This article has been disappointing to many readers that seek from it the ultra secret of great dogs. The value of this article is to further screen away those hunters with a kill only attitude.
