What cannot be seen in this picture and that is off to the right is the grass waterway the covey initially flushed from. The point is on a single quail. Within this region of Iowa, large grain fields of corn and soybeans are the predominate agricultural product. Traveling south into Missouri will yield more cattle pasture on the increasingly larger hill slopes. This farm was corn. These pictures are from middle November and about 90% of the fields were cut. Early November had about 90% of the crops standing. A lucky, earlier 12 day warm and low humidity period allowed farmers some long days running their combines.
This close up as well as the earlier picture shows how thick the brush cover is. And, shot opportunity would be with the hunter on the high side of this drainage ditch that was running 4 - 5 foot deep and away from the brush.
