Arkansas Ducks

KAIT, K8, ABC, Jonesboro, Arkansas, Region 8--Brett Garrett Reports, Will Ducks Fly This Upcoming Hunting Season?

"...Arkansas State University the number of ducks in this region is down 15%...Clay County Extension Agent Andy Vangilder: 'The farmers and duck hunters in the northern states have learned how to keep their fields flooded and have food for the ducks and they are holding them up north a lot longer than they have in past years,' said Vangilder....it's that the birds aren't making it down to Region 8....'The ducks are wintering farther north. There's more ducks in Missouri, Illinois and there are even more ducks wintering in Canada right now,' said Bednarz [ASU professor of wildlife ecology]."

Deer

A couple of fawns spotted this week while on land runs hunkered down in the grass while posting signs. We've observed one of the most successful carryovers of deer in years.

On another land run we found this.

Wetlands

Part of the definition of monotony must include riding a 4-wheeler in endless circles preparing the seedbed and planting a recently flooded and drained waterfowl wetlands too wet for a regular tractor and planter. A snapshot from one of our southern wetlands. This is our second attempt to plant sorghum on this wetlands and we will take a another stab at the remainder seen in the background when it drains. Weather like the migration determines our success not the lack of honest effort.

Fishing

Yesterday, while making my rounds I (Jon Nee) decided to go 20 minutes out of my way to visit with a landowner I haven't seen for a while. He was very happy I stopped by and took me for a tour of his land, which gave us time to visit and gather some feedback about the members using his land. He was mostly satisfied, but had one complaint that he would rather I deal with than him. We drove to one of of the ponds and he threw some fish food in the water and the channel cats ate every bit in a couple of minutes.

To make a long story short, his only complaint was a member and his son fished the same pond for several days and camped. He really enjoyed their company, but was disappointed they were using trotlines and jug lines to fish for his channel cats. This landowner's hobby is making better fishing for those that fish, a personal interest of his. He has, at his cost over the years, purchased fish and stocked his ponds for Association members.

Let's pass that trotlines and jug lines are off limits on Association ponds, pits and lakes. It's an unethical means of fishing and displays an unsportsmanlike image to the landowners.

Scenes From The Blind

Jason sent these in from this past spring season.

His comments included: "...the toms hung up on this hunt...plenty of bird action...plenty of gobbling....last week of the season..." He went on to get a tom and said the hunt of these pictures was more memorable for what the turkeys taught him.

Thanks Jason. It is always good to work with those that find more than tags filled.
