Kansas muzzleloader deer hunting is split between a late September into early October, pre rut season and the regular firearms coming off the peak rut in late November through early December. The one muzzleloader or firearms deer tag is good for both seasons.

Kansas muzzleloader deer tags do have more variety than those unfamiliar with Kansas deer hunting regulations may anticipate. There are muzzleloader only tags. Muzzleloader whitetail only tags and a muzzleloader "any deer" tag that allows for both Mule and Whitetail Deer hunting on the same tag. Then there is a "firearms" deer tag that covers the muzzleloader only season as well as the modern rife season. We will assist the first year Association hunter with which tag best suits his plans.

Kansas muzzleloader deer hunting key point relative to Mid-America Hunting Association include that muzzleloader hunting is a minority deer hunting season showing but few hunters. The September season starts in pre-rut with bachelor buck groups predominating deer hunting tactics switching over to the early rut by the end of September with rubs appearing. By the end of the early muzzleloader season scrapes are active.

Of those hunters that first hunt the early muzzleloader season find they do not like it and never return. The common complaints are the weather is too warm and see no bucks. The reality is that most that try the early season do not change their deer hunting tactics to hunt a deer behavior motivated by food and survival rather than reproduction, or during active rut phases when standing in deer stand may be the right technique.

Kansas muzzleloader deer hunters that return each season for that one particular deer season find there success rate with eyes-on high and shot opportunity frequently defeated by thick underbrush. Heat and lack of deer movement are not concerns. Those that are successful mostly credit their seeking out of the bucks in isolated loafing areas that supply cover and water. Specialty food sources other than soybeans that remain green during this season is not a concern as there is plenty of browse.

kansas muzzleloader deer season as well as all of our deer seasons allows the self guided deer hunter the chance to hunt his own style, explore a variety of deer behaviors and terrain. That extra bit of adventure well defines the value of this hunt. This would be opposed to a guided hunt where the hunter simply walks behind the deer hunting guide. Where is the fun in being led around?
