MAHA Upland Bird Hunting - how it works

Pheasant and Bobwhite Quail

Upland bird hunters reserve a "unit" of property each day. Units range from 1,200 to 11,000 acres. The hunter may select where to hunt on any of the farms within that one unit.

Counties typically have several units. Any hunter calling up to hunt any given county and is the first for the days he wants to hunt has his choice of the available units. The next hunter calling to hunt the same county on the same days has his choice of the remaining units. If all units should have a hunting party assigned then the gun limit per unit comes into practice.

A unit gun limit is the total number of hunters we will allow within any one unit. An example would be a 4,000 acre unit of land that may have a 6 gun limit. Typically bird hunters hunt as a party of two or three hunters so this would mean in most cases two hunting parties roaming around the 4,000 acres. By any estimation that is a lot of space as anyone even with the most high power bird dogs expects to cover more than 400 to 600 acres a day is kidding themselves.

Our lease land covers a lot of large acreage, large farm fields with plenty of cover and food. This allows for 100% natural habitat and wild birds.

And, closed in cover as well.
