30 May

Well Kelsey is now too old for the youth hunt, but that didn't stop her during the regular firearms season. This was her first year hunting the regular season and she was successful once again. It was a great time for both of us, we didn't see a lot of deer, but we did see one that was big enough for her. The best part is not the hunting, but spending the time with her. It won't be long and she will be moving on to bigger and better things...like college, hopefully these memories will stick with her as I know they will with me.

Congratulations Kelsey! We can all feel what dad is going through. Thank you for the thoughts.

Waterfowl

For the first time in the past 5 years every wetland available to our waterfowl hunters is full of water, except for Cass A and Holt A, which are drained and planted to crop every year.

In Holt A, they are scheduled to plant corn, but if rain continues, they will be forced to plant beans. Cass A most likely will be planted to beans since it’s extremely low bottom ground.

All of the pools in Linn County, including the holding lake are full. We would like to drain the south half of the west marsh and plant some millet or milo for blinds 5 and 6. The only setback would be if the beavers have the drain pipe clogged.

Henry D, from the north facing south. Lots of holding water for the hot summer months to come.

We’re going to hold the water in all of Henry A, B and Henry D, except for the south wade-in area in Henry B, which was new 2 years ago

Henry B, the south wade-in area from the south facing north.

The drain pipe letting water drain to prepare to plant soon.

Draining and planting all of Henry A, B and D Would be much too risky with our only water source being intake pipes and/or a major overflow.

Behind the scene projects like this are assumed and unnoticed by the average hunter. Three beaver holes in the levee were repaired. A ten hour project.

Henry C will be drained soon and planted to milo preferably, but millet as a back up if we get a lot of rain during the month of June. Pumping the lake is possible, but the intake pipe to the lake is the best water source we have to work with.

Henry C, from the south facing north. Nice open water from 07 dozer work. To be drained and planted.
