5 May Turkey HuntingLike most spring turkey seasons, the hunters have been working against a lot of rain, wind and unseasonably cool temperatures.
The success has been above average with the bulk of the birds being adult gobblers. The hens are sitting on the nest right now, so let's cross our fingers that they and other ground nesting birds have a good hatch.
We have not tallied the total number of hunters, but it appears the numbers are about the same in Kansas and Iowa, but Missouri appears to be down considerably.
A series of photos of a tom that came in just out of range and moved off out of fear the setup was not convincing enough for him to come any closer. Short green pastures and wheat fields have been primary strutting areas recently, but that can change once the grass and wheat reach a certain height.
