Hunter Expectations

missouri whitetail

We are out on the land a lot during the year and see much. Much what we see is to the benefit of our hunters. To see a group of bucks like this is not a reasonable expectation. It is expected that all who hunt just one week a year should see at least one trophy whitetail. If not, it is not due to the lack of trophy whitetails. Something else is going on.

Self guided hunter resources provided by Mid-America Hunting Association include private land access, recommendations where to hunt and a local lodging listing.

The private land we lease for our exclusive us is maintained in excess of 200,000 acres. It is selected first by being in the region that has a good whitetail production history and has the cover and food habitat to attract and hold deer. All deer lease land is within the agricultural regions where 45 - 55% of the land use is in row crop farming, not cattle, not hay, not pasture land.

Recommendation of where to hunt are provided to all new members to insure they get started off on the right land of suitable deer cover and food habitat within the region that has a good history of production for their deer hunting method of choice (archery or firearms). Recommendations may be ignored and the deer hunter is always free to conduct his own scouting of where to hunt any of our deer lease land.

Local lodging is by motel, B&B, campgrounds. The listing we provide is a tailored "yellow pages" type listing of all hunter services within every county where we have hunting land. It is available and updated yearly on line. Services listed also include meat lockers and tow truck services.

Value provided by Mid-America Hunting Association self guided deer hunts is that all hunters may hunt their style at their pace across as many leases, seasons and states as they have time to scout and hunt.

All may archery or firearms hunt any open state regulated season in the three states, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri, where we lease deer hunting land and do so on their own.

Each hunter may expect an average of 160 acres, a 1/4 section of land, per day to hunt. Habitat dependent acreage may be increased greatly and on the very best farms we will break the land down into 80 acre pieces. The intent is to have sufficient acreage for good hunter separation, yet prevent random pressure on the land through hunters walking through the land without seriously hunting it. the intent is hunt quality. That same hunt quality attitude is expressed in our off road vehicle prohibition, no camping and no drive hunts. If those elements are within your desires then do not even think of calling us. We seek only serious deer hunters wanting good hunts and not those that seek to make private land a playground.

Just got back from my 5 day [location deleted] Safari. I call it a safari because I have the opportunity to hunt two different species of deer (mule and whitetail), three different species of upland birds (pheasant, quail, and prairie chicken), various species of duck and goose as well as two different species of rabbit, not to mention the coyote hunting, all in the same township, in the same county. Normally I just hunt deer, pheasant and quail. This year I harvested two deer, 7 pheasants and a quail. Attached are a couple of pictures of my best day. I harvested an old brawler on the second morning of the season with a mile spot and stock coming within 30 yards of the old bruiser. In most deer pictures that I am in, there is a little deer shrinkage because I am a rather large guy. When looking at this buck, remember that I am 6’4” and weigh about 250 lbs. He had 9 of his 12 points broken off but did not have any scars which would mean to me he must have been the dominant buck in the area. After I took this buck to the locker to donate the meat to Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH), I went back and harvested three roosters and a quail in a late afternoon hunt. The next day, I bird hunted in the morning and harvested two roosters, and harvested an anterless deer for FHFH in the afternoon. Quite a busy two days of hunting. Most of the balance of the time I took some pictures; I will send you a link in which you can see a sequence of photos that show two nice bucks chasing a doe.
Take care, [name deleted]

For the rest of us this hunter's pictures we have seen many times over the last several years showing us all how he is after the hunt and not the tag or bag. An especially good person to work with. Thank you for your consistency at supporting your Association.

Consequences of our approach to self guided hunts largely focus on one price only the hunter can pay directly by himself and that is boots on the ground time.

The successful self guided hunter orientation is that his first year is a "break-in" year to learn the land. By the third year most hunters have had enough experience ion the land they are hunting two of our three states every year with only the question of which two it will be from year to year. From that third year onwards the deer hunter is developing the golden nugget spots each farm has and his eye-on success of trophy whitetail deer increases from that point onward.

Self guided deer hunter provides to himself all deer hunting equipment of aerials, stands, blinds, transportation, meals, lodging and licensing. For draw tag states we will assist with recommendations of which unit or zone to make application.
