Upland bird hunters telephone reserve a "Unit" of leases for their pheasant and quail hunts. A unit of land has variable amount of acreage ranging from 240 through 11,000 acres with the difference largely based on the number of leases we can place onto a single 8x11 sheet of paper before we shrink it to the point the bifocal generation may begin to have trouble reading them.

A sample of one of our map sheets in this case representing over 3,000 acres of leases

The same map sheet showing the acres of each highlighted lease.

When reserving this unit (Duncan County, Kansas Unit A) the upland bird hunter has all the posted land at his disposal and may pick and chose where to hunt.

All unit map sheets representing the over 200,000 acres of lease land we have in Kansas, Missouri and Iowa are posted to a member's only website as land contracting is a year round activity with the maps updated as leases are added or dropped through the year. Telephone reservation are made when we man the telephones with our secretary from 9 to 530, Monday through Friday. At the time of calling in for a reservation the hunter will have it confirmed.

These upland bird hunting units allow us several management uses. the first is they are the means by which we distribute hunters. We do not have too many hunters within any one unit at one time and we do not allow too many consecutive hunting days within any one unit. this aspect for the most part largely takes care of itself as most upland bird hunters enjoy more the ability to hunt different localities rather than having to hunt the same fields each time out. If a hunter should attempt to pressure any one quail unit more than he should we will first ask him to spread himself around and then enforce it should he not willingly comply.

If a hunter reserves one of the larger units he may spend more than one day within that unit. If he should reserve a small acreage unit he may have more than one unit for that day.

For all first year remembers and those traveling out to a region they have not previously hunted we will recommend where to hunt based on bird and habitat of preference.
