Have been out...(mid July) and took the attached photo. While there, I heard many roosters and quail calling. I also made a road trip to...and heard the same thing except that I also heard a lot of prairie chickens booming, at least 4 leks in a two section area.
A later trip.
I did not hear very many quail calling and I suspect that they are nesting. Did hear a few roosters calling, but not nearly as many as I had heard previously. I did a little road trip and saw a lot of roosters, many with hens.
A big thank you to Mike for sending in some very tough to get pictures. Mike has been a long time upland bird observer and supplier of those observations contributing to the forecast.
