2026 Spring Turkey Overview

The 2026 spring turkey season was smooth and steady from beginning to end. The weather was spotty, as usual, with temperatures ranging from the 50s to the 80s. We had our fair share of rain and wind, but not as much as we have seen in the past. Recently, we’ve had more rain than we know what to do with.

For the first year Missouri limited non-residents to one spring turkey tag, which deterred some non-resident members from hunting. The total number of hunters was down a little, but we still hosted 180 hunters from 21 different states. Missouri residents led with 99 hunters, Arkansas second with 22, Kansas third with 13 and Mississippi fourth with 12.

Missouri still ranks as one of the top spring turkey hunting states, if not the top in the nation; its total harvest of 50,730 closely matched the 2025 season (51,011) and sits 6% above the historical average dating back to 1998. The feedback from Kansas and Iowa was also positive. Both states reported good turkey numbers and plenty of jakes, which is encouraging for the future. A total of 147 members hunted one state, 39 hunted 2 states and 3 hunted all three states. Many of the members hunted casually and filling one tag was a successful season. But as always, we had a group of die-hards that hunted as hard as they could to tag out. This year only one member tagged out in all three states, and one was taken with a bow. Multiple youth hunters were successful, including a six-year-old who harvested a mature tom on his first turkey hunt.

A couple of members put down their shotguns and successfully harvested a mature bird
with their bows, which is a challenging task.

The heaviest bird reported was 27 pounds, the longest beard wad 12 ½”, most beards
was 3, and the longest spur was 1 5/8”.

Several members recently re-joined the association after dropping out for various reasons. After leaving and returning, they concluded that MAHA members are fortunate to have a library of quality farms to choose from each day of a 60-day spring turkey season.

We are launching a new and improved map and reservation website soon. Our webmaster has been working on this project for months, and we are excited to share it with everyone. Each member will receive an email shortly with instructions on how to access the new platform.

A big thanks to everyone who responded to the feedback request. Feedback is very important in our lease evaluation process. Some landowners even mandate feedback in our lease agreements to help manage the wildlife on their land. Thanks to everyone for another safe and enjoyable spring turkey season. Enjoy the summer, MAHA staff!
