31 July

For those thinking of early archery.

The October, early rut hunter has had the most spectacular success in one season and recurring seasons. Employed techniques include attracting scents, decoys, grunt and rattle. The theory is in October the buck wants a doe but the doe will not take the buck until November. This allows the October hunter to be more sexy to the buck than in peak rut when most admit they cannot pull a buck off a hot doe. This method comes from several gray haired bow hunters with more mounts than most.

We expect from the called in tag counts to have more Kansas deer hunters this year than past years with a good handful or more on a first time western Kansas big open hunt. Past experience has shown the first hunt in the open country a source of frustration with the most success belonging to pheasant hunters and those deer hunters with several western Kansas seasons under their belt. For the first time western Kansas deer hunter this sunset should vividly show just how open Kansas can be (taken by a member with much time in western Kansas and one who knows where the deer are).

There are trees in western Kansas, just not many. It should be the hunt that the hunter is after foremost, any tag filled a bonus.

Good luck to all, enjoy the day.

Thanks to Mike for the reminders.

Waterfowl Work
The rain finally stopped enough to get some last minute seed planted for the ducks. We did get rain shortly after planting to germinate the seed, but at the same time cross our fingers we don't get too much rain.

The fields in Cass and Vernon County have a bumper crop of corn and the lakes are as full as they have ever been.

The conditions of MAHA wetlands look promising up to this point.
