Hunters & Water Conservation Lose

"...About 4 million acres will be taken out of the Conservation Reserve Program on Sept. 20, many of them in the High Plains of eastern Colorado, western Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, the Agriculture Department's Farm Service Agency said Friday...In Kansas, nearly 435,906 acres are set to expire..."

Bird Dog Hunters Lose

"...The Humane Society of the United States and humane organizations across Pennsylvania welcome the introduction of anti-cruelty legislation to prohibit the mechanical launching of live animals for target shooting. H.B. 1411, introduced by Reps. Eugene DePasquale, D-95, and John Maher, R-40, and S.B. 843, introduced by Sen. Patrick Browne, R-16, will also prohibit the tethering of live targets..."

The belief is this is one more animal right nibbling at hunter rights. Most bird dog hunters train with birds in launchers to be shot over a dog. That is just one step away from live pigeon shoots.

Farm Lobby Wins

"As apple marketers try move the remainder of a massive crop - the U.S. had 30% more apples on hand May 1 compared to a year ago, and Washington State had its highest inventory ever - the industry is asking the U.S. Department of Agriculture to buy at least 1 million boxes of whole apples. That's on top of the department's plans to spend more than $16 million on fresh-cut apples for schools...."
