Duck
Jon,
"...The north Zone opener was awesome. We shot a great mix bag (gadwalls, Mallards, Widgeon, Canvasback and Green Wing Teal) and the hunting was much better than last year as the standing corn made it very difficult to do much other than pass shoot...Anyway, overall the club is really good and I think there are just a few fine details that will make the duck hunting great....I attached the pics of myself and Mark and a pic of my daughter who is a future member and duck hunter. Mark is a first year member that I talked into joining and he had a great time...Take Care. Edward

Family Hunters
Hi John,
Enclosed are two pictures of my oldest son’s archery buck...his best archery buck to date. Due to time limitations, Kyle chose to forgo rifle season and go the archery route so he could get a few more hours in the woods this season. Well...after only 20 minutes on stand and a few doe bleats and tending grunts, this nice buck offered a 28 yard shot. The shot was a bit low and forward. I elected to leave the deer alone, so my youngest son and I came back hours later to track the deer. We found him piled up only 200 yards away. Mike learned valuable tracking lessons and got to help Dad drag out the deer. He is pictured with Kyle’s deer. Just another fantastic family outing on MAHA land!!!!!!!!!!!
I also enclosed pictures of the mounts of Mike’s first two birds that we just received from Hazel Creek Taxidermy in Green Castle, MO from last spring’s turkey hunts. A beautiful Eastern and Rio, both harvested on MAHA properties. Thought you’d enjoy them!

Quail
Jon,
Went on a four day hunt to [location deleted] counting arrival and departure days. The weather was warm, dry and not much wind. On the better mornings we averaged 5 birds in the bag taking anywhere from 1 to 3 per stop down to zero on the hot days. Each day we had one farm of no birds and on all others we either had quail, pheasant or both. My dog does much better on cold weather as he has good standoff on pheasants and always does well on quail regardless of the conditions. During warm weather I observed he cuts the scent cone too close to allow the roosters to hold for point.
I could have taken more pictures of the dog with birds but as it was warm we dressed all out as soon as we made it back to the truck. If I had sent in all the tailgate pictures they simply look like the same birds over again. The point pictures I sent will show better the amount of action we encountered.
Thanks for all you do. Having knocked on doors most of my life I can hardly believe how you are able to get so much land.

Spring Turkey
Reports from Iowa bird and archery hunters state turkey numbers are noticeably up this year just about everywhere within the region where MAHA has lease land, zone 4 for resident and non-residents. Past MAHA member Iowa spring turkey hunting has been limited compared to Kansas or Missouri.

Iowa spring turkey tags are by draw tag application. Typically, the application period is from mid December through the end of January for the April through May season. Iowa does maintain a viable point preference system for non-drawn applications giving advantage to that applicant the subsequent tag application. Unlike Missouri, Iowa's spring turkey season is all day long hunting. Youth season is for residents only. See the Iowa DNR website for a first hand, authoritative listing of all regulations.
