Farming
With all the recent talk about crops, a member sends in a reminder of the diversity that Kansas has to offer, cotton.

Fall
The first real hint of fall has come to the central midwest far after the northern hunters have said the same thing for their area and long before the southern hunters stop sweating. Days in the 70's and nights in the 50's. The local long range weather forecast is following that of our cooler and wetter spring and summer with an earlier than average predicted first hard frost. Hard frost dates for our area have a range of 2 to 31 October with October 18 being the average. Something all farmers know, deer respond to and bird hunters hoping for a cool November watch closely.

For those that have already planned an October deer hunt there has been interest this past week due to the weather and appearances are we will have more October hunts this year than last. These earlier hunts have been a slowly increasing trend observable over the past 5-7 years. The southern hunter has been leading the way for these earlier hunts with the northern hunter catching on largely due to how warm the November peak rut has been the last several years.

Bird hunters are more skeptical about the prospects for a cool November. There is always hope, and there are the memories of many half day hunts to rest the dog during T-shirt warm afternoons that typically have accompanied dry, dusty scenting conditions.

For all, some reminders of what winter may bring.

After an ice storm.

An ice fog morning.

Bone chilling day.

A walk through the brush for the tough.

Thanks for the pictures Mike!

Bird hunters don't quit because of the hunt. They quit hunting for not wanting to see another dog pass on.
