Continuing with an idea to reduce the mystery of where to upland bird hunting as much as pictures and text can do is to further develop how within the watershed the habitat runs for miles. All the pictures in this entire series is of the habitat within one small 80 acre portion of one lease.

Typically, any one hunter of two bird dogs will find the available daylight hours to limit most hunt to three quarters. "Quarters" is a local expression, as a quarter section of land is a 1/2 mile by 1/2 mile square or a 160 acres. Quarter sections are also the most often bought and sold unit of land in the central midwest as well. When talking to many farmers he will express how many quarters he owns or farms rather than by total acreage.

Habitat pictures are always challenging as they depict only a small part of what is available.

What we are trying to illustrate in this one picture in the near ground is the thickness of the cover. In the mid and far ground the continuing edge and far tree line are all for hunting. To cover this 80 acres walking at a fair rate, with two dogs did take a hour to cover more than two thirds of the cover.

The world is large and the bird dogs are small. The birds have a million options of where to be and the dogs even with their scenting ability reaching 20 feet or more into the wind cannot cover all there is to hunt.
