Youth hunting is highly encouraged during both the separate youth hunting season and at any time with a parent (family membership required). Youth hunting in MAHA will allow child and parent the opportunity to spend time with nature away from any other influence on private hunting lease land.

For all those hunters with children how can you not want to hunt these special seasons?

A family member writes...

Hey John and Jon...thought I'd put together a brief summary of our season. My kids and I thoroughly enjoyed our membership over the past year and are all looking forward to the hunting, fishing, and camping next year.

Early in the year we kept looking for that perfect snow for a rabbit hunt but by March we realized that we should have taken advantage of the free time we had and made the rabbit hunt happen with or without the snow. We will take that lesson forward this year and get a rabbit hunt in no matter the weather.

We started off with a 9-month old Llewellyn that while I knew he was too young to really make a quail hunt, my kids and I still had a blast following him around some of the club's properties. Turkey season was hard on us all...lots of time in the woods but mostly empty tags to show for it all...after my oldest son missed a big gobbler youth weekend we couldn't get much done with the long beards and finally settled for a jake the last day of the season. We did find nearly 450 morels though and caught a nice batch of crappie to go along with them. We'll probably remember the season for that if nothing else.

A good summer of camping and fishing went way too fast with a couple of good stringers of catfish and several nice bass caught and released to remember over the years. Then fall was finally here...we never did find the dove or teal like we had hoped and the fall turkeys were too elusive for us but once again, the camping was more than worth the effort. Our youth deer season was productive with my youngest son tagging his first racked deer and my oldest son bagging a nice doe. The regular gun season was lean with only one big doe taken at camp this year.

Muzzleloader season was looking very good with my oldest boy and I seeing lots of does and young bucks...we just knew that 10-pointer was on his way down the ridge any minute now and passed on every doe we saw thinking..."We will use the doe season to fill our tags..." You know how that goes though don't you?

First weekend of doe season - only bucks...no does...figures, right? But now we had an 18-month old Llewellyn to chase around and that weekend provided us with 7 different coveys in around 6 hours hunting...that was fun!! We didn't do much harm to the bird population though...my kids shoot too slow and I shoot too fast. The next doe weekend found my daughter and I up north for her birthday. The cold and snow made the camping challenging and the deer did not appear to be moving much...but just enough. We tagged another big doe and found three coveys during two 3-hour bird hunts. Two more quail hunts brought one covey the first hunt and then a three-covey day on New Year's Day...it has been a good year.

Now...my resolution: beyond our normal hunting, fishing, and camping, I resolve to add the following this year: One more quail hunt...or maybe two At least one rabbit hunt, no matter the weather At least one coyote hunt More crappie fishing  Several frogging trips...it's been too long since I've fried up a batch of frog legs Wade fish a couple of creeks we discovered the last year or two Catfish the Neosho Get my oldest boy up in a bow stand Get back in a duck blind or on an irrigation lake for a day or two That's probably enough...I'll be hard pressed to make all these additions to what is already a full schedule...but I'll persevere, for the sake of the kids if nothing else... :-) Good hunting and good fishing and thanks to all of you that make this outfit run so smooth. Always something to look forward to.
